Stop At: Beijing, Beijing
Shadow Play or Shadow Puppetry is an ancient Chinese traditional folk art, which old Beijingers call the ‘donkey shadow shadow’. In 2011, Shadow Play was selected to be part of the Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
This activity is held in an ancient courtyard that houses a professional Shadow Opera Theater that has been running for almost 20 years. The address is Beijing Shichahai Shadow Play Theme Hotel, at 24 Song Shu Jie, Xicheng District, Beijing.
The activity incorporates a classic traditional repertoire, as there are usually traditional and modern performance techniques. Show runs every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 20:00 pm; it contains two acts and lasts about 30 minutes in total. Once finished, you can meet the Shadow Play master and try your turn as a shadow opera artist to personally experience the charm of shadow play.
There is an additional extra option to learn how to paint the Shadows. In this activity the shadow master will explain the cultural background of the shadow play, teach you shadow play skills, and assist with you to color the materials into your own original work of art. The activity starts after the Shadow Play and last for around one hour.
