Stop At: Temple of Confucius and Guozijian Museum, No.13 Guozijian Street, Beijing China
The house of the top think tanks for emperors since the 13th century. Emperors used a famous civil service examination system to find talents from the mass. The tests were centered around Confucianism. Anyone could be promoted as long as he tested well. Such a class-leaping-channel played a vital role in stabilizing society.
The very top talents were admitted to this academy and considered protégés of the emperors. They were groomed to be powerful officials to help govern China. This system heavily influences today’s China. You will see the process of the entire system here.
This Academy is also a precious library, as it keeps some most precious ancient books and relics. Many of them are the last remaining copies. When you visit, you must walk through the 189 stone steles carved with “The Thirteen Classics” (over 630,000 characters). The scriptures are teachings of Confucius on values, ethics, and social orders. These are the real cornerstones of China.

Stop At: Hutong Tour, No.9, Zhonglou, Dongcheng District No.9, Zhonglou, Dongcheng District, 100009, Beijing, Beijing 100009 China
The real culture of Beijing lies in the Hutongs (courtyards). When viewed from the air, the interlaced lanes resemble a maze or a chessboard with delicate gardens, fine rockeries, and ancient ruins which makes them a wonder in the world. People live in the same courtyard form a tight community. They help out each other throughout lifetimes.
Given the fast modernization of Beijing, only a few Hutong courtyards are preserved. They are the hidden sanctuaries for people to escape the hustle and bustle of the outside world. Standing inside of a courtyard, you will immediately travel back in time. As you enjoy a pot of traditional Beijing flower tea and tasty snacks with your host, feel free to sing along with chirping birds, play with running Pekingese puppies, or tease goldfishes in porcelain basins. Serenity is the theme here.
