Built in the 17th century, the temple was originally the residence of Prince Yin Zhen until he was appointed as Emperor Yong Zheng in 1723 when the palace was converted to a temple. Despite being closed for many years following the establishment of the Communist State, the temple has survived intact and is once again active as a place of pilgrimage for followers of the of Geluks Pa (Yellow Cap) sect of Tibetan Buddhism. The temple becomes bustling when it opens in the morning, the followers come to pray for their wishes coming to be true and worship the Buddhas by burning incenses. There are several exceptional halls to view, each topped with yellow tiled roofing that gives the whole complex a very distinctive look.

After walking out of Lama Temple, you continue to the famous Beijing Hutongs. The name Hutong comes from the Mongolian word for ‘well’ because historically people would build their homes close to or around a well. Nowadays Hutong means a lane way or alley. This is a fascinating area of Beijing with long lane ways of grey-tiled buildings and your visit will include a family visit and strolling through zigzag alleyways where you can observe the different streets and the local people going about their everyday lives.

Your lunch will be arranged in a local popular restaurant with Beijing favorite dishes served. After lunch, you continue your visit the Temple of Heaven. The whole complex was constructed in the 15th Century and was used by the Emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasties to pray each year for a good harvest. The Temple is now a UNESCO World Heritage Listed site and the extensive surrounding parkland is a popular place for local people to congregate and socialize with activities such as singing, dancing, Tai Chi, or just drinking tea and chatting.
Your guide will walk with you around the complex and explain the purpose of each of the buildings and allow you time to enjoy the surroundings before walking through the surrounding parkland where you will engage in a Tai Chi lesson about 45 minutes from a Tai Chi master. Tai Chi was originally an aspect of martial art training but today it is seen more as a regime for promoting better health outcomes. It is believed that by focusing the mind on the movements of the exercise it helps to bring about a state of mental calm and clarity and provides additional health benefits. You will find the Tai Chi lesson quite relaxing.
Walking out of the Lama Temple, you will be transferred back to your hotel where your tour ends.
