Historically an important military installation, Juyong Pass was constructed with structures of various functions ensuring logistic supplies and effective management and governance. In the Yuan Dynasty (1272-1368), the Juyong Pass functioned as a major traffic artery from Beijing to Inner Mongolia. Since Yuan emperors often took this route between those places, temporary imperial palaces, temples, and gardens were constructed.

From the 14th to the early 20th century, a large number of temples and shrines of Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucianist origin were built in the Juyong Pass.

Upon arrival, follow your your tour guide to hike up and down and explore different watch and beacon towers. You can decide how far you want to go and how long you want to spend at the Great Wall.

Next, stop at a local restaurant to fill your empty stomach. Then heading to the Sacred Way of the Ming Tombs.

Alongside the Sacred Way are 18 pairs of marble figures lined up in antithesis, these marble figures, sculptured from whole stones, were erected over 500 years ago, the traditional way of putting over marble figures as guard of honour in front of the mausoleum began in the Han Dynasty which signified the dignity of the emperor, symbolising the good fortune and warding off evil influence.

Follow your tour guide to walk along the Sacred Way to gain deep insight into the Fengshui theory which practiced here and learn more stories about the Ming Dynasty.

Then, move on to the Dingling Tomb at the Ming Tombs. Construction of Dingling Tomb (定陵) started in 1584 and was finished in 6 years later. In 1620, Emperor Wanli (万历皇帝) was buried here with his two empresses. Now, Dingling Tomb is the hottest among the thirteen for it is the only Ming imperial tomb excavated so far.
