China’s national opera, Peking Opera, enjoys immense popularity among Chinese theatre goers, and holds great appeal to foreign audiences. Its origins date back to 1790 when four local opera troupes from Anhui province came to Beijing to give performances at the Qing court. In 1828 they started to stage joint performances at the imperial palace of Qing dynasty with the local opera troupes from Hubei province. The art was influenced by Beijing local dialect, and drew on each other, as well as the artistic styles and expressions of other local operas, particularly singing.

These joint performances developed over a twenty-year period which was during the reign of Emperor Xianfeng (1850s) into a new form of opera, with distinctive features. This became known as Peking Opera. Peking Opera combined the characteristics of a variety of traditional Chinese operas.

All the pieces in this show basically major in physical movement, gesture, dancing, and martial art. You don’t need to worry about the language. You’ll see the delicacy of the make-up and costume, which is complicated and quite professional. The voices and guestures of the performers are strictly stylized based on different types of characters. The costumes and decorations are strictly designed according to the gender, age, rank, social position and status of each individual character. So is the make-up. It is the essence of Chinese culture, aesthetics, and also a possibility to see live ancient Chinese lifestyle.
