Stop At: Chengde, Chengde, Hebei

Chengde was once a summer resort, boasting the world’s largest Royal Garden, Eight Outer Temples and a Natural Grassland – Mulan Paddock. Emperor Kang Xi (1662-1723) discovered this rare scenic spot during a hunting trip. In the next eighty-five years, Chengde was built into a summer resort and the Emperors usually spend several months a year here to escape summer heat. The palace partially resembles the Forbidden City in Beijing and partially the classic gardens in South China. The Eight Outer Temples (actually twelve temples) was built to show respect minority groups and their beliefs. Among them, Putozongcheng Temple was reminiscent of Potala Palace in Tibet. The whole construction was listed on World Heritage Cutural Sites.
