Stop At: Ruins of St. Paul’s, Rua de Sao Paulo, Macau China
The Grand Semba Torii (Portuguese: Ruínas de São Paulo) is a site on the front wall of the Church of the Mother of God in Macau (ie St. Paul’s Church). St. Paul’s Church, the predecessor of the University of San Francisco, is a subsidiary of St. Paul’s College, founded by Catholic Jesuits. The college was established in 1594 and ended in 1762. It is the first Western-style university in the Far East and China. There are grammar, humanities, and ethics theology departments. The college has trained a large number of missionaries to teach in Japan, mainland China, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and other places. St. Paul’s Church was once the most magnificent church of the Jesuits in Macau and the Far East. It was basically completed in 1603. St. Paul’s Church is the first baroque building in China. The crystallization of artistic fusion represents the achievement of Catholic art in the Far East, and also reflects the historical and eastern cultural integration and uniqueness of Macau [4].
In 1992, the Grand Semba Torii was elected as one of the “Macao Eight Scenic Spots” and won the nickname “Sacred Ruins of Samba” [5]. On October 23, 1996, the Macao government built a Catholic art museum and cemetery in the place of the main altar of the original church, displaying some of the precious cultural relics of the Macao church, and the site has become a religious site again [6]. In 2005, the Sanshenba archway was included in the World Heritage List [7] as part of the historic district of Macau.
