Itinerary
Day 1: Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Drepung Monastery

Potala palace is located 3700 meters above the sea level on the top of “Marpo ri” the red hill in the center of Lhasa city. The 33rd King of Tubo dynasty Songtsen Gampo built this palace in the 7th century. Fifth Dalai Lama rebuilt the Potala palace in 17th century. Potala palace was being rebuilt for over 1300 years to become the present size. Previously Potala was religious and political center for the successive Dalai lamas. There are two palaces in Potala: Red symbolizing religion and White symbolizing politics. The Potala palace consists of great chambers, praying halls, chapels, monks’ schools, and monks’ dormitories. 8 golden tomb stupas of successive Dalai lamas (5th and 7th to 13th), 5 solid mandalas, Thangkas, scroll-paintings, stupas, 70 thousand cultural relics and 60 thousand volumes of scriptures. The Potala palace is called the pearl on the roof of the world. In 1989 Potala Palace is listed as the world cultural heritage by UNESCO.

Stop At: Drepung Monastery (Zhebang Si), Southern Slope of Genpeiwuzi Mountain, Chengguan District, Lhasa 850000 China
Drepung monastery is located at the bottom of Mount Gyalpen Wutse 8 kiloimeters away from Lhasa city to the west. It was built in 1416 by Jamyang Choeje Tashi palden, the disciple of master Tsongkhapa. Drepung is the biggest monastery of six “Gelugpa” Yellow hat sect monasteries in Tibet. “Drepung” means “a pile of rice” as the monastery looks like a pile of rice from far view. Drepung was once a house for 7700 monks. The main chapel and shrine of the monastery is Jampa Thongtrol – the “Future Maitreyan Buddha”, legend says that once you see this buddha you will be liberated from evil. The monastery has always been worshipped by pilgrims and keeps attracting tourists from all over the world.

Day 2: Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Drepung Monastery
Stop At: Sera Monastery, Wuze Hill , Sera Chengguan District, Lhasa 850000 China
Sera Monastery is located 5 kilometers to the north of Lhasa city at the bottom of Sera Wutse. According to the legend the monastery was built during a big hailstorm which gave it a name Sera (“hailstorm”). Jamchen Choeje Shakya Yeshi, the disciple of master Tsongkhapa built it in 1419. It is one of the six “Gelugpa” Yellow hat sect monasteries in Tibet. The monastery used to be a house for 5500 monks. The main chapel or shrine of Sera is Tamdrin “the horse-necked, Hayagriva”, it is said that Tamdrin was dug out from underground just after the monastery was built. Every year a lot of pilgrims and tourists visit Sera.

Stop At: Norbulingka (Precious Stone Garden), No.21 Luobulinka Road, Chengguan District, Lhasa 850000 China
Norbulingka park in Tibetan means Jewel garden and served as a summer residence of Dalai Lamas. It is located in the vicinity of Lhasa city and can be visited as a part of Lhasa city tour. Norbulingka was built in 18th century at the time of seventh Dalai lama. Norbulingka has been reconstructed for 200 years and currently covers the the area of 360.000 square meters. Territory of Norbulingka include Kelsang Podrang, Chensal Podrang, and Tagden Mingyur Podrang: three different palaces that were built for 7th, 13th, and 14th Dalai lamas. Every summer Dalai lamas moved their residence from Potala Palace to Norbulingka park. Tibetan traditional opera and dance performances take place in Norbulingka every year for seven days from June 30th to July 6th. A lot of people visit the palace during this exciting period. It is a great place which makes it very exciting place to visit and enjoy.
